2021 has just begun and we are already full of expectations ...

What will the new year bring us? When will we be able to resume doing those things that were once so obvious?

Finding the patience and the right motivations is not always easy, but it is certainly necessary.

Let's try to be proactive and imagine our post-pandemic life. Let's try to project ourselves towards a bright and optimistic future. Let us be infected by the enthusiasm of the American magazine "Travel + Leisure", which has named Italy "Best Destination 2021".

Here are some ideas from our friend Elena Markova, founder of the Lifestyle Magazine "Como Lake Today" to gain some sprint and start a stimulating and dynamic year on our Lake Como.

  1. Tour of the walled city of Como

The  city of Como is the provincial capital and the point where usually begins the visit of the city and its lake. Tourists arriving in Como by train flock to take pictures of the beautiful squares and especially of the lakefront. But only a few of them actually discover the real walled city with its hidden beauties, its fascinating legends and its sophisticated corners. The walled city of Como is instead worth of a guided tour. Alessandro Volta, Giuseppe Garibaldi, Plinio, Adamo del Pero and many other characters have influenced the history of this splendid place, leaving an impressive imprint. To understand Como you must definitely book the tour of the walled city.

A boat trip on Lake Como can never be missing. It is the best experience you can give yourself in the surrounding area. It is precisely from the water that the lake reveals its true beauty and it will be able to amaze you in any season or weather! Don't forget a warm scarf or a plaid to travel in total comfort in the fresh air of the lake.

  1. Visit to Bellagio

Bellagio, called the jewel of Lake Como, is one of the most popular locations on the shores of the lake. It is a small village of extraordinary beauty that attracts tourists from all over the world. The atmosphere of this place and the landscape made of cobbled streets and colorful buildings enchant visitors who stroll there for hours, enjoying the Mediterranean air. The beautiful surroundings and the pleasant mild climate made Bellagio popular long before the Clooney era: Franz Liszt and Stendhal came to rest just here.

  1. Varenna, one of the most colorful villages in Italy

Varenna - a medieval village with Celtic roots, is known as one of the most colorful in Italy. It is an hour's drive from Como and 15 minutes from Bellagio by ferry. Not all tourists who visit Lake Como manage to reach Varenna, but this town is definitely worth a trip. Until recently Varenna was a common fishing village. For centuries, the main source of income for local residents was marble mining and fishing. Today Varenna is one of the most famous cities of the lake worldwide and thousands of people come to see this magical town every year. It is advisable to leave early in the morning to enjoy the city with enough time and without the hustle and bustle.

To understand the charm of Lake Como you need to visit its villas. Even for those who have already seen the historical houses of the lake it is always an extraordinary experience to return to the villas to relive the enchanting atmosphere they offer. Villa del Balbianello, Villa Carlotta, Villa Melzi d’Eril, Villa Monastero are inevitable places to see and see again. The gardens of the ancient villas are beautiful and romantic in any season. Surely the garden of Villa Carlotta is one of the most famous in Italy. There you can admire a real Italian garden: citrus avenues, geometric flower beds and numerous luxurious terraces overlooking Lake Como.

  1. Aperitif at the Grand Hotel Tremezzo

In Italy, the aperitif is an almost mandatory ritual and on Lake Como there is no more magical place to do it than the Grand Hotel Tremezzo. This hotel is an Art Nouveau building surrounded by a large park where you can step back in time and relive the Belle Époque. The beautiful interiors, the bright colors and the luxury furnishings will make you relive the glamour of a distant and enchanting era. An evening at sunset in this Liberty building will give you a truly extraordinary and unforgettable experience on Lake Como.

  1. Panoramic trekking on Lake Como

Exploring Lake Como by walking along the paths full of history and natural beauty and visiting the most panoramic points of the lake is not only a pleasant but also a healthy experience. The hiking trails around Lake Como have a total width of over 250k.

The nature, the views, the flowers, the cold surface of the water, the snow-capped peaks of the mountains in winter or the light of the autumn fog will remain in your memory for a long time.

There are places on Lake Como that you would not expect to exist. Casa Bianca Como is one of them. A historic villa open to the public since 2024, it houses a deeply personal contemporary art collection — works by Francesco Vezzoli, Pier Paolo Calzolari and others — alongside Cova, the historic Milanese patisserie. We went on a winter afternoon. We will return.
